As a forming tap, it displaces material rather than cutting chips, eliminating chip-jamming problems and producing stronger, work-hardened threads; it is best suited for ductile materials such as aluminum, mild steel, brass, and stainless steel. The black oxide finish (steam oxide) visible on the tool reduces friction and provides light corrosion resistance.
