This is a new Greenfield Industries 381342 left-hand spiral point (gun) tap in 5/16-18 UNC (NC), manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a black oxide finish for corrosion resistance and improved lubricity. The GH3 tolerance designates a ground thread with a +0.0005 to +0.0015 in. pitch diameter oversize range, making it suitable for threading through-holes in mild steel, aluminum, brass, and similar materials where chips are pushed ahead of the tap rather than backed out. The 2-flute (2FC) design and left-hand cut are intended for reverse-rotation tapping operations, left-hand threaded fastener applications, or use on CNC machines with left-hand spindle rotation; the 6H3 designation further confirms Class 6H tolerance to ISO metric/ANSI standards for the thread form. This tap accepts a standard square-drive tap wrench or machine holder with a 6 in. overall length shank appropriate for extension holders, and it is made in the USA as stamped on the shank.
