This is a new Hertel 59898882 hand plug tap in 2-1/4–12 UNC, manufactured in the USA from M2 high-speed steel with a bright (uncoated) finish and 6 straight flutes. The H6 tolerance class indicates a pitch diameter limit range of +0.0005 to +0.0060 in. above basic, producing a 3B class-of-fit thread — appropriate for general-purpose through-hole and blind-hole hand-tapping applications in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. The plug chamfer (3–5 threads of lead) provides a balance between starting ease and bottoming capability, and the 6-flute straight-flute design distributes cutting forces evenly around the large 2-1/4 in. diameter, reducing chatter and deflection. The large square shank is sized per ASME B94.9 standards for use in standard tap wrenches and machine holders capable of accepting the shank of a 2-1/4 in. tap.
