This is a new Kennametal KHSST28250 plug-style spiral point tap in 3/8-16 UNC thread form, manufactured in the USA from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright (uncoated) finish. The +.005 oversize designation indicates the tap cuts threads at a +0.005" oversize tolerance, compensating for spring-back in materials such as aluminum, plastics, and other non-ferrous alloys where thread contraction after tapping would otherwise produce undersized threads. The spiral point (gun tap) geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap rather than packing them in the flutes, making it suited for through-hole tapping operations on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. The plug chamfer (3–5 thread lead) allows the tap to be used in through holes where a starting chamfer is acceptable, and the square shank is compatible with standard tap chucks and holders accepting 3/8" tap shanks.
