The Mitutoyo 178-296 is a new, low-measuring-force replacement detector (stylus) designed for use with the Mitutoyo SJ-201 and SJ-301 surface roughness testers (Surftest series). The stylus tip features a 2 µm radius with a 60° included tip angle and a measuring force of 0.75 mN — specifications confirmed directly from the label engraved on the instrument body — making it suited for tracing fine surface profiles with minimal workpiece deformation. The detector body uses a precision cylindrical shank that mounts directly into the SJ-201/SJ-301 drive unit pickup arm without tools, and the diamond stylus tip geometry (2 µmR / 60°) conforms to ISO 3274 and JIS B 0651 contact stylus standards for surface texture measurement. This unit ships in its original Mitutoyo clam-shell case, caution sheet, and protective foam insert, all confirmed visible in the provided photos; it is manufactured in Japan.
