The R228 designation denotes Norton's Metalite TF (Tough-Flex) construction, which combines a durable J-weight cotton cloth backing with a tight-flex treatment that resists cracking and tearing during demanding roll, drum sander, and stroke sander operations. This roll measures 24 inches wide by 25 yards long (609.60 mm × 22.86 m) and is loaded with premium aluminum oxide grain at 80 grit — a medium-coarse cut suited for weld blending, rust and scale removal, surface conditioning on ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and rapid material removal on wood.
