The Starrett No. 98-18 is an 18-inch cast iron machinist's level featuring four spirit vials — one ground and graduated main vial mounted in a cylindrical barrel with knurled end caps, one cross-test vial set into the body for 90° checks, and two additional vials — designed for leveling and aligning machine tools, surface plates, mills, lathes, and other precision equipment. The hardened and ground base provides a flat reference surface, and the graduated main vial allows quantitative measurement of inclination rather than simple level indication. The cylindrical barrel vial assembly is removable and reversible for error-checking via the reversal method. This example is used in good condition; the cast iron base shows typical use wear and the paint has minor scuffing consistent with shop use, but the vials are intact and the ground base appears serviceable.
