The Sumitomo SMDT1760MEL-ACX80 is a new, uncoated (bright) carbide milling insert in the SMDT (square-style double-sided tangential) family, designed for use in Sumitomo's high-feed and shoulder milling cutter systems. The MPN decodes as follows: SMDT = insert style/shape (square double-sided tangential), 17 = 17mm inscribed circle size, 60 = 60° cutting edge geometry element, MEL = medium edge geometry chipbreaker for versatile milling, and ACX80 = Sumitomo's ACX80 PVD-coated (AlTiN-based) carbide grade optimized for milling of carbon steels, alloy steels, and stainless steels at higher cutting speeds. ACX80 is a fine-grain cemented carbide substrate with a hard PVD coating delivering excellent wear resistance and toughness balance. The insert features a multi-edged design with a torx-style central clamping hole, visible in the image as two hex socket screw holes on the top face, consistent with a double-sided tangential indexable geometry offering multiple usable cutting edges per insert. Compatible with Sumitomo SMDT-style high-feed milling cutter bodies designed for the 17mm insert seat size.
