This is a new Walter Prototyp A2340606-UNF5/16 spiral flute bottom tap manufactured in Germany, sized 5/16-24 UNF to a 3B tolerance class for close-fit threaded holes in through or blind bore applications. The tap is constructed from cobalt high-speed steel (HSS-E/COB) and carries a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, which provides higher surface hardness and lubricity compared to standard TiN, improving tool life in steels, stainless steels, and cast iron. The spiral flute design — with a left-hand helix — pulls chips up and out of the hole during cutting, making it particularly effective in blind-hole tapping on CNC machining centers and tapping machines. The modified bottom chamfer (BTM) geometry delivers threading to within approximately 1–1.5 threads of the bottom of a blind hole. The shank features a hex drive section visible in the photos, compatible with standard tap holders and quick-change tapping chucks accepting 5/16 in drive shanks.
